Director, Brazil Institute, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars
Paulo Sotero Marques is the director of the Brazil Institute of the Woodrow Wilson Center. In 2009, he joined the adjunct faculty of the Elliott School of International Affairs, George Washington University. From 1989 until he joined the Wilson Center, on 2006, he was the Washington correspondent for Estado de S.Paulo, a leading Brazilian daily newspaper. He has been a commentator and analyst for the BBC radio Portuguese language service, CNN International, CNN en Español, Al Jazeera, and is a contributor to newspapers, magazines and scholarly journals.
Mr. Sotero is a frequent lecturer on Brazilian affairs at U.S. universities, think tanks, business and civic associations and has appeared on national radio and television news programs in Brazil and the US. A native of São Paulo, he started his career in journalism at Veja weekly magazine in 1968 and held positions in Recife, Paris, Lisbon, São Paulo, and Brasília. In Washington, he worked also as correspondent for Istoé weekly magazine and the financial daily Gazeta Mercantil.
Mr. Sotero is the recipient of the 1987 Maria Moors Cabot Award, from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and the 1993 Distinguished Visiting Lecturer award from the Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. State Department. In Brazil, he was awarded the 1978 Prêmio Abril de Reportagem. He is a member of the Maria Moors Cabot Prize Board; Grupo de Conjuntura Internacional, a forum of discussion of Brazilian foreign and trade policies at the University of São Paulo; and the Fernando Braudel Institute of World Economics, also based in São Paulo. Mr. Sotero has a BA in History from Catholic University of Pernambuco, Recife, and a MA in Journalism and Public Affairs from American University, Washington, D.C.
Mark P. Jones

Mark P. Jones (Ph.D., University of Michigan) is
the Joseph D. Jamail Chair in Latin American
Studies and Chair of the Department of Political
Science at Rice University. The author of over
one hundred articles and chapters on politics in
Latin America, Professor Jones is regularly
quoted in the local, state, national, and
international media on issues related to
government, politics, and public policy in the
Americas. Professor Jones regularly serves as an
advisor on political issues for a host of
national and international institutions such as
the the Inter-American Development Bank, the
Spanish Government, the United Nations, and the
United States Government. Professor Jones is a
frequent invited speaker in Latin America, with
recent presentations given at the Universidad
Nacional de San Martín in Buenos Aires, the
National Assembly of Panama in Panama City, and
the Universidad de la República Oriental de
Uruguay in Montevideo.

He was born in 1969, in the City of Natal – State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, and he graduated in Business Administration with emphasis on Corporate Finance from the University of California Berkeley – U.S.A. He attended, in Brazil the Program of Strategic Direction and Business Planning from the Getúlio Vargas Foundation – Business Administration School of São Paulo.
He resided in Switzerland, in Geneva, having studied French and graduated from the University of Geneva, having attended the Seminars “Health, Education and Housing in Third World Countries” and “Political Sciences” promoted by the United Nations - UN.
He also resided in England, in London, and studied English in the following Schools: Central London College and Hammersmith and West London College. He attended the Seminar “Ecology in Brazil on the Amazon Forest”, promoted by BBC I and Rede Globo.

In the general elections of 1998, he disputed the office of Representative, having been elected as Substitute Representative of the Brazilian Progressive Party of the State of Rio Grande do Norte (“PPB”), having been a member of the 51st National Congress Legislature (from 1999 to 2003). Also in the general elections of 2002, he ran for office of Representative, having been elected Substitute Representative of the Liberal Part of the State of São Paulo (“PL”), becoming a member of the 52nd National Congress Legislature (from 2003 to 2007).
